My Tiny Garden

My Tiny Garden

Design your own mini, edible garden using crackers, hummus, and fresh vegetables and herbs.

Age 6+ ~30 min

This is our favorite go-to garden recipe because it is fun, inspires creativity, and encourages kids to try new things!  You will need a base like rice cakes, tostadas or other large, flat crackers;a spread like hummus, refried beans, or light cream cheese; and a variety of vegetables and herbs cut into small pieces.  If possible, start out by walking through a garden and ask the kids to describe what they see. If a garden is not accessible, have kids close their eyes and describe a garden they have seen. Plants, rocks, pathways, trees, soil…  all of these things are part of a garden and we’re going to use our imaginations to create our own miniature gardens and then eat them! Make sure everyone washes their hands well. Then show the children how to apply the spread and then stick bits of vegetables and herbs into it to create a pretend garden. Have extras ready for children who drop their cracker or want to create more than one.  As the children are creating their gardens, stop by and ask questions. Encourage them to describe their "garden" and what is growing in it. Once everyone has shared, enjoy your healthy garden snack together!

We have also used this lesson to discuss eating the colors of the rainbow, encouraging kids to create colorful creations, and have also tied this lesson to learning about the six plant parts
