Flower Bling

Flower Bling

Create nature-inspired jewelry using fresh flowers and fishing line. 30 min, Ages 5+

Spring and summer is a great time to create beautiful necklaces, bracelets or crowns made out of flowers found in nature and some 40 pound gauge fishing line.  Flowers with sturdy centers work best such as daisies, black-eyed susans, zinnias, or dahlias. Cut the fishing line to the length you would like with a little extra at the ends.  Head outside and collect the tops of flowers that you’d like to add by pinching the flower off the stem. Help your kids push the fishing line through the center of the flower; it should be strong enough that they won’t need a needle, however older kids can use a needle if they want, which would allow them to push through tougher parts of the flower. They can string as many flowers as they like onto the line.  You can also add leaves or other soft garden items.  If you want to have your necklace planned out ahead of time you can put the flowers in the order in which you want to place them on the necklace before putting them on the line, or you can spontaneously add flowers as you go.  To finish off, tie the ends using a square knot or just take the two ends and make a loop and put the ends through. Show off your new jewelry for a fancy garden party or just for fun!
